Skin Purging VS Breakouts: What’s Normal?

After certain facial treatments or new skincare products, some clients may experience what is commonly referred to as “skin purging.” Purging occurs when active ingredients increase skin cell turnover, bringing underlying congestion and clogged pores to the surface more quickly. This can sometimes appear as small breakouts, bumps, or congestion shortly after starting a new treatment routine.

Purging is most common with treatments or products that contain exfoliating acids, retinol, acne targeting ingredients, or resurfacing treatments. It is usually temporary and tends to occur in areas where you normally experience breakouts. As the skin continues to renew itself consistently, these symptoms often improve over time.

However, there is a difference between purging and irritation. If the skin becomes excessively red, painful, itchy, swollen, or develops a rash in areas you do not typically break out, this may be a sign of irritation or sensitivity rather than normal purging.

Consistency and patience are key when it comes to skincare treatments. Skin healing and improvement take time, and understanding what your skin is experiencing can help reduce stress during the process.
